Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is my best guard in the NBA this season. Others have been close, but the separating factor is one thing, he’s so fun to watch. But fun to watch doesn’t score you points here in Box score, stats do, and here they are. SGA is averaging an incredible 32 points a game which is 4th highest in the league. More incredible, his 54.7% field goal percentage is highest percentage from a guard this season. The NBA knows that SGA is an elite scorer, but they may not know how he does it. Unlike other guards, SGA does not just score from behind the arc, he uses his 6’6 frame to work inside and find open mid range shots. As seen on this shot chart, SGA is shooting well above league average in the mid range area, as well as dominating while driving to the rim.His effective shot making and smooth handle lets him get to any spot he wants.Guards are simply unable to match up with his combination of size and speed.Speed that players at his height can’t keep up with.Shai being so fun to watch is because of the same reason other efficient players are. It’s more fun to watch a guy who’s getting to a spot where they can make the shot,then it is to watch those who simply chuck up three’s.SGA is showing that shooting from long range is not the only way to live in NBA coaches nightmares.
